Taxi driver, nutritionist, chief cook, 24/7 counsellor, cleaner of houses, first aider, dispenser of kisses (and bandaids!), laundress extraordinaire, proof reader, cheer leader, police woman, diplomatic adviser, financial adviser, career coach, keeper of dreams and secrets…all roles that go hand in hand with being a mother. I almost forgot to mention that she’s also the source of unconditional love and wisdom, but that goes without saying!

Remind yourself that you’re doing a great job

As mum it’s easy to forget just how vital you are to the wellbeing of your family. Mothers don’t always feel appreciated and they certainly don’t hear “Thank You Mum” as often as they could. If you’re a mum that’s feeling unappreciated at the moment, please give yourself a gentle pat on the back, yes now, and say, “Good job Mum!” If you’ve got a mum and it’s been awhile since you told her how much you appreciate her, don’t let another day go by without doing so.

Say “Thank You” and feel happier too

Need more convincing? It appears that when we take the time to say a heartfelt “Thank You” it improves our happiness and satisfaction with life too. A study done at Kent State University* showed that students who wrote one thank you letter every two weeks for six weeks felt happier and their sense of wellbeing increased with each letter! The students were asked to write letters that were positively expressive, showed some insight and reflection, were nontrivial and contained a high level of appreciation or gratitude.

When we say “Thank You” it sets the stage for a positive focus because it requires noticing what you like, rather than what you don’t. It’s too easy to get caught up with grumbling about those little things that get under our skin rather than amplifying what we want more of. Everyone loves to feel appreciated and when you tell someone how much you appreciate them, they want to give you more of what they know you like. It’s a win/win!

Tomorrow, April 29th from 11-1 pm, the Bare Hands team will be at River Quay, Southbank where we’re giving Brisbane the opportunity to share with us their Mother’s pearls of wisdom and say #ThankYouMum. Get a free photo taken and go in the draw to win one of two Pana Chocolate I Love Mum gift packs. A heartfelt thanks goes out to all the wonderful people and businesses who have made the inaugural #ThankYouMum event a reality.

Hope to see you there!

Warm regards,

Laurie
